Alzheimer’s disease
Alzheimer’s is a degenerative brain diseases in which
nerve fibers become tangled, protein deposits or
plaque build up in the brain tissue, and normal mental
functioning declines.
Common symptoms are memory loss, disorientation
and confusion.
From Macrobiotic point of view, it is caused by long
term dietary excess.
When food become one-sided, it affects thinking,
emotions and mental functions.
If the nerves, brain cells and tissues are too tight
(yang) or too loose (yin), thinking become impaired.
Dietary causes
The primary cause of Alzheimer’s is chronic/long term,
excessive consumption of animal fat and protein from
meat, poultry, eggs, and dairy, which affects the
nerves and capillaries, tightening and hardening.
The secondary cause is excessive intake of simple
sugars, especially refined sugar, honey, etc, loosening
and weakening.
Sugar affects the synthesis of the B vitamins in the
intestines and consequently brain functioning.
* recent studies have shown the relation between
excess sugar intake and mental decline, including
Alzheimer’s diseases.
Too much oily, greasy food, refined (white) flour, hot
spices also are contributing factors.
Diet to prevent Alzheimer’s
Cut down on extreme foods mentioned above
including :
Animal foods, sugar, stimulants (spices, alcohol,
coffee, etc)
Eat less of flour products including pasta, bread and
other baked foods, and greasy/oily foods, especially if
Alzheimer’s is already developed.
Instead, eat more whole grains in whole form such as
brown rice, millet, barley, oats, etc, as well as variety of
seasonal vegetables, beans, bean products, sea
vegetables, in different cooking methods.
