This video shows how kids in 2 countries, US & Japan, develop totally different relationship with food through school lunch.
In one society, kids are provided with almost no "real food", while in the other, they are taught that food is not just what fills your stomach, but an integral part of your life that brings you joy & happiness.
Being a food doctor in the US for years, I often find that how people are disconnected themselves from food they eat, which makes me feel sad. In fact, it's not just in US, but in Japan these days, and in many societies as well.
Where is the joy of cooking & eating? I mean, in a true sense?
Everything that we put into our mouth becomes "us". So naturally, we want to choose the food that feed our body & soul, food that makes us truly happy.
But when you don't see food that way, it doesn't matter what you eat, as long as it fills your stomach, and with "stimulating flavor" that gives you an instant satisfaction.
It doesn't matter if you are eating at a desk checking your email or watching Netflix, or just walking on the busy street.
And it doesn't matter how it affect us later, because "Food is nothing to do with my body, my health or my life!"
Have you ever heard a saying, "Heaven in your mouth, hell in your gut"? Well, all the foods served in American school lunch in this video seem to be very good examples.
But I really don't believe that food should be reduced to something like that.
Food has a power to nourish your body & soul, to bring people together & smile, and make us healthy & happy. And trust me, there are a lot of foods that do all of them! (that doesn't include burger & fries)
Even If we missed the opportunity to learn that at school, it's not too late!
And I'm here to share it with you as a food doctor.
Let's have a better relationship with food now : )
