Eating in Autumn

Fall is the season of harvest.
Everything in nature contracts and moves its essence inward
and downward.

Autumn is associated with the Metal element, and its cool,
dryness affects lungs and colon.
With qi received from air and foods, the lungs function to
protect the surface of the body from viruses, bacteria, and
other invading pathogens.
Also lungs and colon are associated with grief or sadness.

Symptoms of lung imbalance

thirst
dryness of the skin, nose, lips, and throat
itchiness
sinus problems
nasal congestion
lung and bronchial conditions
frequent colds
susceptibility to contagions
confusion
unreasonable attachment
finding hard to let go of emotion, ---grief, sadness

Causes of lung imbalance

Too much meat, dairy, and other congesting foods, processed
foods, which cause mucus to be deposited in the lungs, and
blocks theirs proper functioning.
Too much yin foods, watery, light, leafy or foods originated in
warmer climate.
When toxins build up in the lungs and colon, it creates tension,
exhaustion, and causes hair and skin problems, and pale
complexion.
Sedentary lifestyle also blocks the energy flow.

If exterior conditions are not cleared up, they can develop into
heat in the lungs, which leads to fevers, red tongue with dry,
yellow coating, dry cough, painful sore throat, etc.

Eating in Autumn

In autumn, the appetite is stimulated through the sense of
smell, by the warm fragrance of baked or sautéed foods.
And concentrated foods and roots thicken the blood for cooler
winter.
Root vegetables, round shaped, warmer colored foods are in
season and abundant and eating should reflect this.
Also add astringent , sour flavor to foods this season.

Eat less yin foods, --watery, light, and leafy vegetables such as
salad greens or foods originated in tropical or warmer climate,
which create excess mucus and congest the lungs, also thin
blood --- salads are good for yang season, spring and
summer.

If you develop lung related problems or heat in the lungs, add
foods and herbs that cool the heat. Such as watercress, apple,
pear, seaweed, daikon radish, carrot, pumpkin, kuzu,
cabbage, bok choy, cauliflower, chard, mushroom etc..

Cooking

In general, cook with less water, at lower heat for a longer
period of time, which generate more yang energy to foods in
this yin season.
Warm soup, stew, simmer, are good this season.
