Eating in harmony with Natural Order
“Why banana and avocado are not suitable for us?”
Food as energy
In the East, food is considered not just nutrients.
They see food as a condensed essence of the environment where it
grows.
Food takes in the unique chemical balance of soil, water, air, as well as
the energy from the sun while growing.
And finally they are harvested, come to our table.
Then they are digested, assimilated and become parts of our body.
Everyday, we are taking in the unique energy of the environment as a
form of food.
Food is “the bridge” between our inner and outer environment.
We use food to create our own inner environment.
We are part of the environment, too.
Eating foods that are grown where we live
If we choose food wisely, our diet can help us achieve a harmony with
the external environment.
But if our food choices are unwise, our diet causes us to lose harmony
with it, and sickness results.
So eating foods that grow in which we are living, or at least similar
climate, is most suitable for us, and enables us to adapt to the external
environment.
Do these food support us to cope with this weather??
Eating in season
Each food grows in a different place and season.
And again, each has its own unique energy.
Vegetables and fruits grown in summer, for example, have natural
cooling effect, such as lettuce, tomatoes, green onions, egg plants,
cucumber, summer squashes, berries, water melon, peaches etc.
While those grown in colder seasons have more warming effect, such
as winter squashes, pumpkins, turnips, and other root vegetables, etc.
So being mindful of season in food choice is also important to maintain
a balance and harmony between our inner and outer environment.
Eating summer vegetables and fruits enables us to cope with hot,
humid weather, while consuming winter squashes or root veggies help
us adapt to cold winter.
But eating foods that come from very different environment, climates,
or out-of-season foods regularly makes us lose this balance.
And eventually it leads us to illnesses.
Bananas and avocados
Bananas and avocados are one of the most popular foods in the
country.
Nutritionists encourage you to eat those “potassium rich, healthy fat”
food regularly.
But has this trend made us any healthier?
I see so many people complaining frequent infections(colds, flu, ear
infections, etc), cold hands/feet, etc especially during the winter even
though they eat those supposedly ‘healthy” food almost everyday.
“Nutritionally speaking”, they may be excellent foods.
But from energetic point of view, I still have to add a question mark.
Those foods are from tropical climate, hot and humid throughout the
year.
They have naturally cooling effect due to relatively higher content of
water, sugar and potassium.
So they are suitable for those living in tropical climate to adapt to the
hot, humid environment.
But for people living in temperate climate, they do not support and
sustain our unique bodily need.
And if we eat those food regularly, we could eventually lose the ability
to cope with the environment where we live, such as the change/cycle
of the season, especially harsh, cold winter.
Body temperature and immune function
For the immune system to function well, the body has to maintain a
certain temperature(about 98.6F).
Studies have shown that slight drop of body temperature decreases
immunity, while keeping the body warm can significantly increase the
ability to fight against illnesses.
If you are healthy, occasional consumption of bananas and avocados
in summer is fine, and helps you to cope with hot, humid summer. But
they are not the food that harmonizes between our inner and outer
environment, especially in winter, or for those with health problems who
needs strong immunity.
Sodium and potassium
Even from chemical point of view, they are not suitable for regular
consumption for human body.
Foods from tropical climate is generally very high in potassium.
And that could disturb the delicate balance of sodium and potassium in
the human body.
Sodium is the fundamental mineral in our body.
There is a reason why the blood tastes salty.
This sodium has a very strong effect to kill virus and bacteria,
therefore, protecting us from infections.
But thin, low sodium blood, as a result of excess potassium in the diet,
creates an environment where those pathogens are attracted and
thrive.
Excess potassium makes us more susceptible to infections and other
diseases.
Also, recent studies have shown that low sodium, as well as excess
sodium, can cause heart coronary diseases, too.
We need a good balance. Not too much, but not too little.
The ratio of sodium and potassium in the bodily fluid is about 1 to 10.
But in banana, for example, the ratio is 1 to 450 to 600!
This does not match the chemical balance of our inner environment at
all.
Eating and living in harmony with natural orders
The sun rises in the morning, comes to the peak, then starts to
descend, and the night falls.
We wake up in the morning, become active during the day, and rest at
night.
That’s the natural order.
If we do not live in that order, sleeping during the day, and being active
at night, we eventually get sick.
Sickness is the result of living against natural orders.
For thousands of years, human beings have been eating foods
primarily from their own environment, seasonal and grown locally.
Only last one hundred years or so, we started to eat foods from
completely different parts of the world.
Different soil, water, air, sun and energy.
And as this trend wide spreads, and as we go against the natural
orders, more and more people are suffering from illnesses.
From macrobiotic point of view, recovery of health or healing is the
process where we bring our way of living back to being in harmony with
natural order.
Eating foods that grow in which we live or similar climate, and in season
is, therefore, essential to reverse the sickness and maintain our health
and well being.
Next time you do a grocery shopping and cooking (or simply eating),
think not only about nutrition, but about where the food come from,
which season they grow, what kind of energy and effect they might
have on us .: )

Sodium -- essential for our body
Sodium is also essential for nerves,
brain function as well as
heart/circulatory system, and other
fundamental bodily systems.
