Eating in Spring
Spring is the season of yang energy.
Positive, ascending, and active energy is felt everywhere.
Liver and cleansing of body system
According to ancient Chinese medical philosophy, this season
has a wood element, associated with liver, gall bladder and eyes.
The sight of the green color of tender young plants nourishes the
soul through the eyes, so the appetite for food decreases, and the
body naturally cleanses itself.
Healthy liver establishes a smooth, soothing flow of energy or qi
through the whole person, in both body and mind.
Too many heavy foods can clog the liver this season, resulting in
spring fever and allergies..
Also liver disharmony causes emotional difficulty, such as anger,
impatience, frustration, resentment, violence, etc…
So this is the season when we should eat less, or even fast, to
cleanse the body of the fats and heavy foods we accumulated in
winter.
Eat light, Cook light
In Spring, the diet should be the lightest, and contains foods which
emphasize yang energy, ---ascending, expansive qualities.
Such as young plants, fresh greens, sprouts, etc..
Sweet ----not artificially but naturally---and pungent flavor is
recommended by ancient Chinese philosophy, to create a
personal spring within.
Most of the grains, legumes, and seeds have a primarily sweet
flavor.
Cooking methods should be easy and simple, too.
Quick cooking, such as sauté, steam–with high temperature and
for a short time---, or salads are good this season.
But too much raw foods could dampen digestive fire.
Also, too much oil makes liver swollen and sluggish in circulation
of qi energy.
Using less salt, seasonings or oil, enjoy the natural flavor of each
fresh foods.
Take a trip to a farmer’s market, and enjoy what this new season
offers to us!
Other tips for allergy seasons.
