Eating in Summer

In Summer, also yang season, we express yang principle.
Expansion, growth, lightness, outward activity, brightness, and
creativity.

According to the ancient Chinese philosophy, summer is
associated with the Fire element, which rules the heart and small
intestine.
Especially, the heart is considered not just an organ, but a mental,
emotional center.
The heart not only regulates blood circulation but also control
consciousness, spirit, sleep, memory and mind.
In fact, we all know that emotion affect the actual function of the
heart.

Symptoms of the heart imbalance
1 poor circulation
2 aversion to heat
3 depression
4 confused mind
5 loss of memory
6 weak spirit
7 speech problems
8 excess or no laughter

and those symptoms are caused by
yin ---cooling
energy---deficiency.
Summer is the season to nurture your heart by supplementing
yin
energy.

Eating in Summer

Summer offers abundant variety, and diet should reflect this.
Use plenty of bright colored vegetables and fruits this season.
Cooling foods such as salad greens, fruits, sprouts, summer
squash, tofu are suitable.
Too much cold foods, however,  can cause contraction and
weaken digestive system.

Cook lightly

Colorful salads would be nice in summer.
But not too much dressing or oil.
Sautee with high heat for a short time.
If boil, steam or simmer, do it as quickly as possible.
Use less salt---hard on your heart--, and more water.
A bit of spice would be nice this season, especially on the hottest
day, since the spices increase warmth at first but bring the body
heat out to the surface to be dispersed.

Avoid heavy foods, such as meat, eggs, dairy---not too much ice
cream!--,  excess nuts and seeds on hot days since they can cause
sluggishness.

Also, things such as coffee, alcohol ,tobacco deplete yin energy,
and affect the heart, too.

Eat less and lightly is the most suitable way of eating in Summer.
Enjoy colorful and creative meals with simple cooking!
