Underlying causes
Headaches are caused primarily by excessive
consumption of “extreme food and drink”
Stress and tension enhance the pain, but rarely the root
cause.
Types of headaches
1 Front of the head
Caused by excessive consumption of strong yin
foods/drink, such as sugar, chocolate, honey, other
sweetner, fruits, juice, alcohol, drugs, medications.
Heat or warm weather(yang) makes the condition worse.
2 Back of the head
Caused by excess strong yang foods, such as meat,
eggs, poultry, cheese, grilled fish, sea foods, salt, salty
foods.
Also hard baked foods such as bread, cookies,
crackers in excess can cause the headache in the back.
Cold weather(yin) can make it worse.
3 Side of the head
Oily, greasy foods are the primal cause of this type of
headache, since those foods affect the smooth function
of the liver and gall bladder whose meridian run up to
the side of the head.
Left side can also be affected by more yin foods(sugar,
fruits, spices, stimulants).
While right side, by more yang foods such as animal
foods or salty foods.
4 other
Overeating/drinking, excess spices or herbs(mint,
pepper mint etc), medication, supplements can also
cause headaches
Dietary solutions
Depends on the type(s), avoid the foods/drink that may
be causing the symptoms.
In general, avoid too much salt, oil, raw foods in cooking.
Fruits, nuts are also not recommended until the
condition improves.
Eat less, or even do semi-fasting for a short period of
time.
Avoid late night snacking.
Chew well (at least 50times each mouth full)
Home remedy
1 for frontal headaches(yin), as well as headache
accompanied by constipation
drink umesho bancha tea(yang).

soak feet in cold salted water, and massage second and
third toes(stomach meridians) to discharge excess yin
from the body.
2 for rear headaches(yang)
take a small cup of apple juice or orange juice.
Soak feet in hot water, massage the ball of the foot
(kidney meridian) and fifth toe(bladder meridian).
3 for side headaches
drink grated daikon drink to help discharge excess fat.

grate fresh daikon radish 2 tbs, add a cup of water and
simmer, then add a few drops of soy sauce
miso soup with scallion or onion is good, too.
soak feet in lukewarm water and massage the fourth toe
(gall bladder)
4 for deep, inside headaches
take cooked apple or heated apple juice would be
helpful, as well as umeboshi plum.
Massage big toe (liver and spleen).
Other life style suggestions
Take break from electromagnetic (computer, TV, radio,
cell phone) as much as possible.
Avoid chemicals for cleaning products, detergent, and
body products(soap, shampoo,lotion, perfume etc),
instead use natural ingredients one.
Go outside and walk, ideally in nature, as much as you
can.
Put green plants inside the house, especially where
there are TV, computers, etc.
(peace lilies, peperomias, goosefoot plants, dwarf
banana plants, or golden pothos etc)
Shiatsu, acupuncture would be also helpful to balance
the flow of energy, as well as self-massage, body scrub
Exercise such as walking, yoga, tai-chi are good, too as
well as meditation
Clear clutter in the house for a free flow of energy (if
need, ask Feng shui expert for help)
Avoid wearing synthetic or woolen clothing, as well as
too much jewelry, perfume and other cosmetics
Avoid using electric cooking devices such as microwave
Sing happy songs or dance!
