Home Remedy for Colds and Flu
In Asia, colds/flu is considered our body’s cleansing process.
In fact, after a week or so of a cold/flu, the blood is cleansed
and immune is stronger, even your skin looks better : )
The best prevention is to avoid excess food/drink in the first
place (especially acid forming foods such as sugar, meat,
dairy), but sometimes it seems inevitable (like holiday
seasons....)
Here is what you can do in the most natural and noninvasive
way to relieve the symptoms and speed up the recovery ---
as opposed to unnatural, forceful “treatment” such as taking
antibiotics or other conventional medicine, which makes your
immune system weaker and leads to more frequent colds/flu.
To avoid in order to recover faster
Sugar (weaken immune system)
Dairy (mucus forming, running nose, sore throat, coughing)
Hard baked foods (also mucus forming)
Fruits/juice (cools your body and weaken immune system)
Alcohol (weakens immune function)
Stimulant such as coffee, caffeine
Heavy foods (hard to digest)
Home Remedy

kneading it
add a few drops of soy sauce

*umeboshi(pickled plum), bancha tea /kukicha tea are both

2 Fever
Fever is a very important sign at an early stage that your
immune system is fighting against viruses.
So taking a pill and forcefully lowering fever could be even
dangerous.
But at the same time, having fever for too long can damage
your body system, too.(and very uncomfortable!)
The best and natural way of alleviating the fever is by
sweating and urinating.
Daikon drink
Antipyretic (alleviate the fever by induce sweat), also diuretic
effect
Grate daikon (about 3 table spoons)
Grate ginger (a few drops)
Put all in a cup
Add 1tbs of soy sauce
Pour hot bancha or kukicha tea
Drink while hot (and sweat!)
3 Sore throat
Also a very important defense mechanism at an early stage.
If your body functions well, you can stop the virus from
entering further down the throat.
But again, it’s no fun to have pain when you swallow even
your own saliva!
Grated daikon (and honey)
Anti-inflammatory of the throat
Grate daikon radish.
Add small amount of honey
Let it sit for a while until juice comes out of daikon
Take the juice (and the daikon) so the juice touches the
throat.
* take it whenever the throat hurts, so it’s good to make
certain amount to last for a while.
4 Couching
Your body is trying to eliminate mucus or other irritant
substances from your respiratory system.
Do NOT eat any mucus forming foods(dairy, flour products,
especially) when you are having a cold.
This is a cleansing process, and even a wake up call, “you
should cut down on dairy foods!”
Lotus root drink
Relieve cough, dissolve mucus in the lungs
Grate lotus root (about ¼ cup), and squeeze out the juice
with cheese cloth
Add a few drops of grated ginger to the juice
Add 1 ts of dissolved kuzu root(optional)
simmer with about 1/3 of water and stir until thickens
add pinch of sea salt and drink hot.
If lotus root is not available, daikon works well, too.
* lotus root is available at Asian grocery stores, or dried
ones at health foods stores.
Others
Keep warm, especially feet
Colds/flu viruses hates warm environment.
Keep the room warm and moderately humid.
Especially keep your feet warm enough.
If the feet are cold, colder blood circulates through the whole
body, especially digestive system.
Wear socks, or take foot salt bath.
Shiatsu Pressure points
Press and massage these two points for colds
Under the skull in the back of the head.
Between thumb and index finger
Eat less
80% of the enzyme in the body is used for digestion and the
rest for immune and repairing cells.
Overeating drive more energy for digestion and less for
immune/defense function.
Eat less or even skip a meal to use more for fighting against
the viruses!
