Kidneys and Winter

Kidneys are the foundation of the body.
Strong kidneys gives you health, vitality and
youthfulness, while weak kidneys cause various health
problems and low energy.

This
yang organs are most affected by winter (yin
season), according to Eastern Medicine.

1 Your face & body tell you ---- a lot!

Swollen eye bags?

The kidneys may be swollen, due to too much liquid
including water, fruits/juice, tea and coffee and other
beverages.(frequent urination is accompanied)

If there are
small pimples or dark spot on the eye
bags, mucus and fat may be accumulating in the
kidneys (and maybe other organs, too), and possible
risk of forming kidney stones, due to too much fat,
especially dairy foods.

Skin Problems?

Skin is considered “the second kidneys”.
When kidneys are overloaded by filtering too much
toxins, they come out through skin, and causes skin
problems.
The biggest culprit of this is sugar and dairy foods.

Ear problems?

Ears are connected to kidneys, according to Eastern
medical philosophy.
Trouble hearing? Otitis media or any other ear
problems?
Your kidneys may be in trouble.

Bones/ hair problem?

Weak bones (frequent fractures, osteoporosis) , hair
loss, premature gray hair, could be related to weak
kidneys.

Weak in lower parts of the body?

When the kidneys are weak, reproductive organs and
legs, which are the root and foundation of the body,
are also weakened.
The sign of aging is often seen in this part of the body.

Low back pain?

Pain in lower part of the back could be a sign of
troubled kidneys, too.

Fear

The emotion connected to kidneys is “fear”.
When you are so afraid that you cannot move on or
go forward (like, when you are in fear, your legs shake
and just don’t move!), kidneys may be weakened.

Hoarding is a sign of fear for the future, "just in case".
Can't let go of things? Kidneys may be in doubt!

2 What weakens kidneys?

In general, kidneys dislike yin(cooling, wet).
So in cold season, kidneys need extra care and
should be kept warm inside out.

Coldness

Kidneys are susceptible to coldness.
Foods with
yin(cooling) energy such as raw salad,
tomatoes, peppers, or other tropical vegetables/fruits
or juice are not suitable this season. (those foods are
not naturally available this season anyway)

Too much liquid

Kidneys filter and regulate water in the body.
Too much liquid overloads kidneys.
Also, excess water cools down the organ and
eventually damage it.
Any beverage should be taken in moderation.

Extreme yin

Radiation or electromagnetic waves are extreme yin.
And too much exposure to those (TV, computer, cell
phones, microwave) could affect and weaken kidneys.

Too much protein, fat (dairy) and sugar

Kidneys filter and neutralize toxins such as uric acid,
turn it into urine to eliminate from the body.
Animal protein, in the process of metabolism,
produces too much uric acid, which eventually
overloads the kidneys (and other organs) and blows
back into the blood stream (overly acidic blood).

Sugar also produce too much toxic acids and makes
the blood dirty.

3 Foods to nurture Kidneys

In general, yang(warming) foods are nurturing for
kidneys.

Root vegetables

Winter vegetables such as carrot, daikon, gobo
(burdock root), lotus root, jinenjo (japanese mountain
potato)are very
yang and strengthen kidneys and
lower part (root) of the body.
For some people with extremely weak condition or low
energy, ginseng root is used as a medicine for
kidneys.

Black

The color related to kidneys is black.
Black colored foods, such as black rice, black soy
bean, black sesame, sea weed are full of minerals and
all good for kidneys.

Azuki bean

Azuki bean is the most yang bean and has been
eaten for centuries in Asia to nurture kidneys and
reproductive organs.

In Japan, for example, people eat azuki twice a month
(full moon and new moon) when kidneys correspond
to the moon.

4 Home remedy

Ginger compress
In order to warm kidneys from outside, ginger
compress is good to apply on lower back.

Boil water, add grated fresh ginger, soak towel and
squeeze, then apply on lower back.
Change the towel when it gets cool down.
*to keep the towel warm, cover it over with dry bath
towel.

Massage (meridian)

The center of the sole of the foot is corresponding to
kidneys, which runs through along the inner ankle
bones and Achilles tendon.
Massaging this part is good for the organs.
