Protect from Radiation : )

After the recent nuclear plants explosions in Japan, many of us are more
concerned about the radiation threat to our health than ever before.

Iodine pills has been distributed to the residents in the area near Fukushima
nuclear plants, which is supposedly protect your thyroid from radioactive
iodine 131.

But some traditional foods have been proven to protect the body from
radiation, too, and prevent radiation-related diseases.

Seaweeds and miso --- some clinical studies

Seaweeds, especially kombu (type of kelp) are high in iodine, and have been
proven to have a protective effect against radiation.
The thyroid, which is most susceptible to radiation, has a certain capacity to
absorb iodine.
By filling up with healthy iodine, which is contained in seaweeds, there will be
no room for the hazardous one such as radiation iodine 131, and it will be
eliminated from the body.

Miso, which is made of fermented soy beans, sea salt, koji culture and other
grains, contains an alkaloid called dipilocolonic acid, which is proven to bind
heavy metals such as radioactive strontium, and discharge them from the
body.
Seaweeds are also proven to have similar effect.

In1989 at Hiroshima University's Atomic Radioactivity Medical Lab, Prof Ito did
a study on rats and see if miso has a protective effect against radiation.
Rats were divided into two groups, both exposed to radiation.
One group were fed miso, while the other were not.
The result was that the liver cancer rate for rats that were not fed miso was
100 to 200% higher than the other group.
Also reported was that miso-fed rats had much less inflammation of organs
caused by radioactivity.

a story...

At the end of the World War 2, the first nuclear weapons were dropped on
human being, first in Hiroshima, and the second in Nagasaki.
Right after the bomb, at St Francis Hospital in Nagasaki, under the direction of
Dr Akizuki, the patients and the workers were fed special diet including miso
soup, seaweeds, and brown rice.
Even though most of the 3000 people at nearby hospital, which was located
even further to the ground zero than St Francis, developed radiation related
diseases such as leukemia and cancers, none of the people at St. Francis did.
Dr. Akizuki also treated many other A-bomb survivors relentlessly, and used
miso even as an external plaster for radiation burns.
Roman Catholic Church in Nagasaki at that time called it "modern day miracle".

More benefits of Miso

Cancers, cancer treatments, and miso

over 25 years, the Japanese Cancer Institute tested and tracked 260,000
people, dividing into 3 groups.
group 1 ate miso soup everyday, group 2 a few times a week, then group 3
none at all.
those who did not eat miso showed 50% higher incidence of cancer than the
other groups.

a story...

Dr Evelyn Waselus, a surgeon in CA, was suffering from breast cancer,
underwent a double mastectomy.
Reading about Dr.Akizuki's story, she applied miso as an external plaster on
her own wounded breast, and for the first time in months, she felt that the
burning pain was relieved.
Later she opened Universal Life Center in CA, where she works with cancer
and AIDS patients.
Many patients cannot maintain the sufficient body weight because they lost
the natural powers of digestions and assimilation.
She pre-mix three-year-aged barley miso with other foods for the patient so
the foods are predigested and more easily digested.
also, she "prescribed" miso soup as well as miso plaster on irradiated area,
even to her outpatients.
She reported the result was excellent, including no hair loss from
chemotherapy!

From yin and yang point of view

From Eastern, Yin/Yang point of view, radiation is categorized "extreme yin".
It loosens, softens and weakens the body from cellular level.

Radiation cannot penetrate 30 centimeter wall of seasalt, which is strong yang.
Miso, natural soy sauce, umeboshi, all containing seasalt, have a strong yang
energy, which strengthen the body from cellular level, and offset the effect of
extreme yin such as white sugar, alcohol, drugs, and radiation.
So eating those foods are energetically protect our body from the opposite
energy.

Yin foods, on the other hands, could further enhances the effect of extreme
yin radiation.
Those includes, sugar, alcohol, excess liquid, caffeine, fruits, raw foods, foods
from tropical origins(such night shade vegetables or tropical fruits) etc etc.

To protect from radiation

Whether there is an imminent threat or not, it's a good idea to know how to
self-protect from radiation.
Also, as some studies have shown, we can benefit from the knowledge if/when
you are on chemotherapy, radiation therapy, or any other strong medication
to relieve the side effect.
(i don't want to be a fear monger, but how about X rays or the security check
point at the airport!)

So keep in mind "what not to eat" and "what to eat" below...

To avoid or cut down

Any foods and drink that further enhances the effect of radiation.

White sugar, sweeteners(honey, syrup etc), alcohol, excess liquid(water, juice,
tea, soda), fruits/juice, raw foods(salad etc), nightshade vegetables(tomatoes,
potatoes, spinach, peppers, eggplants etc), refined foods (white rice, white
bread, white pasta etc).

To eat

Any foods that strengthens your blood quality

miso, umeboshi, natural soy sauce, natural seasalt
whole grains(brown rice etc)
seaweeds

Home remedies and special dishes

Have these before, during, and after exposure to radiation.

umesho-kuzu drink
umesho-bancha tea
miso soup

a story...

after Chelnobyl accident, trucks loads of miso were sent to hospitals in former
Soviet Unions and other eastern Europe.
And in European countries, the shelves of miso and seaweeds became almost
empty, as is happening in Japan now!
