Summer and the Heart

Summer, the most energetic season, is associated with the
heart.
The heart governs circulation of blood, as well as heat and
energy.
And it resonates with the strong energy the season, but at
the same time, is easily affected by the heat.

So be wise to not trap heat inside your body.

Eat foods that naturally cool you down

By eating food that naturally cools you down (not ice cream!),
we can minimize the burden on the hard working organ.
Here goes again, eat in season!

Summer veggies, such as summer squash, radishes, salad
greens, cucumber, tomatoes, peppers, egg plants, zucchini,
okra, etc

Seasonal fruits such as berries, cherries, melon, watermelon,
grapes, etc

for grains, corn will be in season soon.
* some foods should be in moderation, due to the alkaloids or
oxalic acid.

Daikon radish, thanks to its diuretic
effect is good if you feel the heat
trapped in your body and somehow
hard to sweat out.

Bitter Taste

Bitter taste nurtures the heart.
Add some dandelion leaf or arugula to the salad, for example.
Broccoli rabe or radish tops are also excellent.

For drink, mugwart tea or barley tea (room temperture) is
refreshing deep inside your body.
Iced coffee? Try "grain coffee" instead, which is much milder
on your body than bean coffee and has no caffeine.

Be wise in Hydration

Hydration is also important, but too much water(liquid) can
overburden the heart, too.(as well as kidneys, bladder, and
sweat gland)
If your nose gets red-ish or swollen, that's the sign you are
drinking too much and the organ is asking for help. Be wise
and moderate.

Be Kind to your Heart

Even though it's the season for BBQ, animal proteins(meat,
poultry, eggs, dairy) are all high in saturated fat and
cholesterol, and can clog arteries and blood vessels, leading
to heart problems.
Also the burn of animal protein can be problematic (even
cancerous) to your health.
Eat less of these, and grill more summer veggies for your
heart : )

Joy and laughter

Summer is for fun!
And not surprisingly, the emotional energy that the heart is
associated with is, JOY : )
Have fun and laugh, and enjoy the new season!
